Two analytical approaches can provide complementary information.
What a chromatographic result describes.
High-performance liquid chromatography separates components under a particular analytical method. A reported chromatographic purity figure depends on the method and the way the signal is interpreted. It should not be treated as a universal statement about all possible impurities or material attributes.
What an identity-oriented result contributes.
Mass spectrometry can contribute information relevant to molecular identity. It addresses a different question from a chromatographic area percentage. The value of either record depends on the sample, method, interpretation and connection to the batch.
Read the evidence as a set.
For procurement, ask which records support the agreed specification and how they relate to the offered material. Avoid assuming that the words “HPLC tested” or “MS confirmed” establish every required quality attribute. This overview explains the distinction, not instrument operating instructions.
Questions to carry into the enquiry
- Which exact material and form are being requested?
- Which documents support the attributes that matter to this project?
- What remains to be confirmed before a quotation is approved?
